Dr. Giovanni Campanile’s contribution at konklife – Beat the Heat, Protect Your Heart: Summer Tips

August 4, 2024 by Functional Heart

The relationship between heat and heart health is more complex than many realize.

As the mercury rises in Summer 2024, so does the stress on our hearts. This is especially true in places like the Florida Keys, where the heat can be relentless. But don’t worry – with a little know-how, you can keep your ticker in top shape even when the temperature soars.

Dr. Giovanni Campanile, cardiologist with Keys Medical Group and medical director of cardiology at Lower Keys Medical Center, explains: “Our bodies get rid of excess heat through sweat. Hot, humid weather forces the heart to work harder, kicking it into high gear to pump more blood to the skin,”

The dangers extend beyond mere discomfort. Numerous scientific studies over the years have consistently shown a link between rising temperatures and increased risk of cardiovascular problems. This well-established connection underscores the urgent need for awareness and proactive measures to protect heart health during extreme heat events.

So how do we protect our hearts when the mercury rises? Dr. Campanile offers these key strategies:

  • Smart hydration: Aim for steady water intake, but be careful not to overdo it. Dr. Campanile suggests “8 ounces of water every 20 minutes.”
  • Electrolyte balance: Sweating depletes minerals. Replenish them, but avoid sugary drinks and limit alcohol.
  • Sun protection: Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and reapply hourly.
  • Exercise wisely: Avoid peak heat hours. Consider indoor workouts on scorching days.
  • Dress for the weather: Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that help regulate body temperature.
  • Stay informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and heat advisories.

Dr. Campanile emphasizes the importance of continuing prescribed medications and working with your cardiologist to develop a personalized hot-weather plan.

Be alert for signs of heat-related illness, including high body temperature, rapid pulse, dizziness, or confusion. If you experience multiple symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Remember, prevention is key. By following these guidelines and staying attuned to your body’s signals, you can enjoy the summer while keeping your heart healthy and strong. As Dr. Campanile would likely say, stay cool and have a heart-healthy summer!
